Alignment Rockford, in collaboration with Rockford Public Schools and Illinois Action for Children, has recently unveiled the city’s first community living room designed to support parents with children aged 0 to 5. This innovative space, located at the Northwest Community Center, offers a plethora of books, learning tools, and toys to provide a stimulating environment for early childhood development.
With plans to introduce a total of 10 similar spaces by 2024, this initiative seeks to prioritize the critical years of a child’s growth and development. Each living room will have its own schedule of story times, programs, and special opportunities, making it an ideal resource for families seeking to maximize their child’s potential. According to findings from extensive research, a child’s experiences from birth to age 5 significantly impact their ability to learn and succeed once they enter school. Thus, the goal of these living rooms is to offer safe, clean, and free spaces where parents can engage in reading and playing activities with their little ones, fostering healthy developmental growth.
Emily Klonicki, the Executive Director of Alignment Rockford, believes that these community living rooms will be instrumental in helping children thrive. She emphasizes the importance of reading to children during their early years as it has been proven to enhance language, social, and emotional skills. Kim Nelson, the Executive Director of Rockford Public School’s early childhood program, further highlights the value of reading and stimulating a child’s imagination through picture books. By building these foundational skills, parents and the wider community play an active role in setting children up for future success.
The Northwest Community Center, honored to host Rockford’s inaugural Read, Play & Learn Space, is committed to creating a gathering place for the community to learn, socialize, and grow. The center will open its doors to all families with young children from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday, with extended hours on Saturdays. Additionally, the program will feature regular programming on the second Saturday of each month. Existing members of the community center will also have exclusive access to the living room from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday.
